How much time does it really take to prepare for the SAT test?
Well, that depends on where you are at now. When we meet the first thing I will have you do is take a pre-test for the reading/writing sections and/or the math section depending on your needs. Then we will be able to set up your learning course. Perhaps you are a top notch student and only need to cruise through the top tier of all the practice sets. This will take approximately 16 – 1 hour sessions. Many students who are really cramming work with me twice a week over two and a half to three months to be at their best for the test date. If you are a medium level student you may need to do some re-learning of core content before we are able to work through the upper level practice sets. This will take more time. For example, it takes approximately 3.5 months (1 hour/week) to work through all the core content for the SAT Math. If you also want to be a top scoring student you will then need to add on rigorous standardized test practice, which will take another 16 sessions.
The ideal time frame for preparing with a tutor for the SAT test, depends on two things – how much content you need to re-learn prior to rigorous standardized test practice, and how frequently you are able to meet with your tutor. If you are able to meet twice a week it may work to focus your test prep within one semester. If you are able to meet once a week I encourage you to start with your tutor at the beginning of the school year, if not the summer before. This will give you ample time to get through any re-learning as well as give you the added bonus of preparing for the P-SAT which is administered in the fall and can impact scholarship opportunities as well.
